Your Home Insurance - Are You Covered?: An Interview with George Kouskoutis of Anclote Insurance Agency

By George Kouskoutis

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

I own and operate a small full-service insurance agency on Tarpon Avenue in Tarpon Springs. After 15 years of operating an Allstate agency, I decided to pursue more options under an independent program. Our staff has nearly 50 years of insurance experience in personal lines and 15 in small commercial lines. We are fluent in Spanish and Greek.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing for homeowners to know about home insurance coverage?

When obtaining coverage make sure that amount of insurance on the dwelling is adequate to meet replacement cost coverage without over insuring the dwelling, thus wasting premium dollars. Review and consider options that are available and MAKE SURE you get your wind mitigation inspection done if your home was built before 2002.

What is the first step people can take to make sure they are adequately covered?

Review the cost estimator used by the agent/company, then review the options available with the company you are to be insured with. When I write a policy with an insured I play the "what if" game. What if I raise the deductible and how that translates to premium savings, etc.

Can you briefly describe what replacement cost coverage is?

Replacement cost coverage refers to how a company settles with an insured when the claim involves a total loss. For example, if during a wind storm event and some shingles on a 15-year-old roof are lifted or damaged and the roof needs to be replaced, then it is done without regard to depreciation.

Are there certain types of coverage that homeowners in Florida typically under or over insure?

Generally the coverage on the dwelling is the most important item to review as the other cover limits are a percentage of the dwelling coverage.
