The Facts About Your Moving Estimate: An Interview with Derek Norman of DRN Moving, Inc.

By Derek Norman

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

DRN Moving is a full-service moving company offering a wide range of local and long distance moving options. We are licensed and insured, and have been in business since 1997.

Is there something important that people should know about getting an estimate from a moving company?

Yes. Always confirm a mover's licenses and insurances; check multiple references and ask for a binding, "not to exceed" quote.

How do you calculate an estimate and what the cost to move a household will be?

Your pricing will be determined by the type of move you are requesting - local, long distance or international. Our estimator thoroughly evaluates what is being moved, the distance you are moving and any special items (pianos, safes, etc.) or special circumstances (elevators, spiral staircases, etc.).

Are there any extra charges could possibly raise or lower an estimate?

There are many factors that affect the cost of your move. Other companies may charge extra for stairs, long walks, bridges and more. We ask for this information in advance so that all of our long distance estimates are all inclusive, flat rate.

After people receive an estimate, what questions should they ask the moving company to make sure that everything is included?

The customer should specifically ask if there are any potential extra charges, and make sure that their agreement is in writing and review the details of the contract. A state or federally approved Bill of Lading or Order for Service should be used. The customer should also ask how their mover handles claims for damaged or missing items.

What advice do you have for a homeowner who has a limited budget but doesn't necessarily want to go with the company who provided the lowest estimate?

The lowest estimate is not always the lowest priced in the end! First, consider all of the variables including packing and materials, valuation and potential additional charges that other movers may charge. Make sure that you are comparing fairly.

Second, the customer can save money by doing some of the work themselves, such as packing and unpacking. Or for those on a very limited budget - consider renting a truck and hiring licensed movers to load and unload.

Lastly, speak with your estimator. They may be able to offer you a discount.
