The Benefits of Custom-Made Doors for Your Home: An Interview with Thelma Gibson of Dream Doors

By Thelma Gibson

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

At Dream Doors, we are able to design and build a door to fit any opening. For instance, if you have double doors and wish to change that to a single door with 2 side lights we are able to build the new unit. We also do "makeovers" meaning if you have a solid door that is in good condition, we can cut and insert our decorative glass pieces.

What are some of the most common reasons that homeowners want custom-made doors over ready-made ones?

People often choose custom made doors because it gives them the option of choosing door styles and glass insert styles. We can do ovals, 1/2 door glass, full door glass or some choose a small fanlight insert.

Can you briefly outline the basic steps and timeline of designing/building a custom door?

When a customer comes to our showroom, they are able to view the door styles that are available and select the glass design they prefer. Once an order is placed, we come out to the home to measure within 3 days. From there, an installation date is set for about 3 weeks. Once the door is built, our painter will pick up and take to his facility to do a professional 3 coat paint process. He delivers it back to us and we put it in the home.

What are some of the basic choices that people will need to make for their new door?

For someone wanting a solid door, we have 3 popular styles. One is a "Rustic" look that we have on display with a distressed walnut stain giving the appearance of an old wood door. We have a 6 panel and a 9 panel to select from as well. Any of these doors can be painted or stained.

What are a few of the most popular styles and features that people ask for?

Most people want the full glass door insert to let in the most light. But they do not want to give up their privacy by letting others see into the house. We have glass that is rated for different levels of obscurity.

Can you share two or three the most unique or unusual types of doors that you've built for homeowners?

The most unusual door unit we have built is an 8 foot "Rustic" double door with 8 foot wrought iron side lights. The unit was installed in the side of a barn that the customer plans to remodel into a home. Another beautiful unit was a "Mohave" Southwestern design glass that was put into a double door unit but only using 3/4 glass. This unit was stained a rich mahogany and turned out beautiful.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

We have a beautiful showroom located at 5220 Shad Rd. in Jax Fl. 32257. We have over 50 pieces of our decorative glass on display. It is so much better to pick your glass out in person where you can see what it truly will look like instead of thru a picture on a website or in a catalog. We do have most of our pieces on our website It is helpful if the customer will bring a picture of their door entrance showing what they currently have. It also helps us to see their style of home to recommend what glass may look the best.
