Thavma Yoga Wants To Cure All Your Ills

By Elisha Neubauer

Marina Bourantonis, owner of Thavma Yoga, was a long-term sufferer of a degenerative arthritic cervical spine and was at the end of her rope and facing invasive surgery as the only way to ease her unbearable pain. It was then that a friend suggested Bikram Yoga.

What happened next was no less than a miracle in Bourantonis's eyes.

From the moment she left her first class, Bourantonis felt completely renewed. She had been saved from the excruciating life she had been facing. It was then that she knew she wanted to help others achieve the same level of healing she just experienced. Bourantonis launched Thavma Yoga as a way to help those looking for the same relief.

"In Greek, Thavma means miracle and it is exactly what I experienced after I tried my first hot yoga class," Bourantonis said. "I wanted to bring a Yoga studio to Bradenton/Lakewood Ranch that supported people's healing, growth, and empowerment through the art of yoga."

She set out to create a safe space, one where everyone is welcome regardless of skill, strength, or experience. Bourantonis wanted people to be able to come heal their bodies and souls in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. She looked to hire only the highest caliber instructors to sustain her multifaceted vision.

"I am proud to have such a well rounded compassionate team as my teachers, who teach with functional anatomy knowledge, compassion and great energy," Bourantonis said.

Thavma Yoga focuses on the Bikram method of yoga. Bikram Yoga is a 90-minute class which features beginner's postures but with an added element of heat. The addition of a heated environment is said to increase endurance and the capacity to build muscles, while strengthening the immune system, burning additional calories, and releases toxins.

"Our studio has a state of the art heating system that provides temperature and humidity controlled heating in the room, always making your experience pleasurable," Bourantonis said.

For those on a busy schedule, Thavma Yoga offers a special 60-minute Bikram class. Other classes include the Thavma Method, designed for intermediate students, and the Phoenix Method, which was developed for athletes.

"The Phoenix Method is a warm class, which was developed to strengthen and rehabilitate athletes, but has seen a wide success in students wanting to rehabilitate injuries and to develop strength in areas where they are weak," Bourantonis said.

When it comes to the community, Bourantonis strives to give back as much as she possibly can. In addition to launching Thavma Yoga to help those struggling with their own pain, she uses the program to help others in need.

"We host donation yoga events at Lido beach and Payne Park with local charities we feel passionate about," Bourantonis said. "Because of yoga, my life has changed dramatically. My goal is to help people in my community the same way."
