Sweet Cravings: Out Of A Sour Tragedy, Something Sweet Is Born

By Pamela Sosnowski

Sweet Cravings was born when Jana D'Agostino and her husband Russ decided to take a very sour situation and turn it into something sweet. They were preparing for their wedding when Hurricane Sandy hit the Atlantic coast in 2012, flooding their Long Beach home and belongings with water and forcing them to subside on air dropped instant meals and bottled water. They had already been planning on opening their own bakery when the storm inspired them to take their business on the road.

"After practically living off (the meals) for a month, we came up with the idea of a mobile bakery/dessert truck," D'Agostino said. "That way if there ever was another hurricane we could drive away and come back and feed people fresh baked desserts, pastries, and hot beverages."

Their color-splashed truck was built in Florida, and the D'Agostinos planned on driving back to Long Beach in it. When their ride wasn't ready until the summer had ended, they decided to spend the winter in the Wellington area of Florida and test the concept. It proved so popular, as well as the mild winter, that the couple decided to set down roots in the Sunshine State. For the past five years they've been touting their cupcakes, milkshakes, French macarons, brownies, and more to the sweet toothed masses.

The D'Agostinos honed their culinary skills as kids; Jana learned cooking and baking from her father, a chef, while Russ was taught by his mother. A shared love for homemade desserts created using the freshest ingredients inspires the Sweet Cravings menu to this day.

"Customers go crazy when they try our cupcakes and desserts because they can taste the difference," D'Agostino said. "We make everything in small batches, with top quality ingredients, and lots of love. We use premium ice cream for our milkshakes, sundae's, cones, and floats."

Cupcakes are baked in traditional flavors as well as unique combinations such as peanut butter cheesecake, French toast maple bacon, and peanut butter and jelly. All flavors were created by D'Agostino and available with any of 15 different frostings and several fillings. According to D'Agostino, one of their customers' favorite offerings is their trademark cupshake.

"I must say I love our vanilla cupshake, which is a vanilla milkshake with one of our vanilla cupcakes blended in it," she said. "You get pieces of cake and frosting in the milkshake and it's really wild."

Sweet Cravings also caters, making custom cakes and dessert tables for birthday parties, wedding receptions, and other celebrations, and hosting cupcake decorating and milkshake parties. The D'Agostinos' truck and tasty treats are usually the talk of any event.

"We treat everyone like family and go above and beyond to make sure our customers are happy," she said. "Our truck has bright colors, we have LED lights and music blasting and it's a whole experience. We pay close attention to details and customize desserts and packages to fit people's needs."
