Sixty Years Family Owned and Operated Magic at Miami's Dolly's Florist

By Elisha Neubauer

Not many businesses make it several decades these days, especially with the twists and turns of the fickle economy over the years, so when a florist shop in Miami is still trucking along over sixty years later, it's definitely time to take note. Known for unique and individualized designs, Dolly's Florist has continued to make quite an impression on the South Florida region, and despite uphill battles with the economy over the years, they've managed to come out on top.

Launched in 1948, Dolly's Florist took its inspiration from the founding family. "I was first inspired by my mother and father, who opened their first floral shop in Hollywood," states Kim Lue, Co-Manager of Dolly's Florist with her mother Lillian de la Flor, also the Owner of Dolly's. "I started working for my mom when I was in my senior year of high school, I got so involved with running the store and working hands on with the gorgeous flowers I realized this is what I wanted to do."

In that time, Lue realized quickly there was nothing quite like working with flowers. "There is no limit to what you can create with flowers and how flowers make people feel," Lue reminisces. Her family's love and passion for the industry shines through in their work. In fact, the business has become most recognized for their unique designs regardless of the occasion, and of course, quality customer service.

"We are now going on our 3rd generation of our family owned business," she states. Having been in the community for so long, they've garnered quite a reputation, and are constantly involved with local Churches, the local Chamber of Commerce, and also many fundraising events for local organizations, such as food banks and others.

Of course, Dolly's recognition goes far behind the confines of the community. They were the official florist of the Miami Fashion Week in April 2007 and also the MTV Video Music Awards for 2004 and 2005. "Dolly's Florist has built a reputation as the innovator of exotic floral design by combining the art of design with the elegance and raw beauty of nature," Lue proudly states on the company's website.

But it's more than just pristine exposure that sets Dolly's apart from other Florists. Oh no, they've taken customer service to another level. "We have an in-house reminder system, where we call each customer to personally remind them of past birthdays, anniversaries and holidays, so they may have the option to order again," Lue tells us.

At Dolly's, they firmly believe that people enjoy having flowers surrounding their memorable moments, whether it be a birthday or a wedding. "Also flowers bring joy and comfort to them during their happiest or saddest moments," explains Lue, pointing out yet another reason why he loves what he does- his customers. "We have been family owned and operated since day one," she says. "We consider all of our employees and customers as family."
