Retrobaked Updates Old Time Baked Goods In Bradenton, Florida

By Paul Rowe

At Retrobaked, baked goods are made from scratch with the finest, freshest ingredients around. Using authentic ingredients allows for tantalizing natural flavors to shine through. In an area featuring many bakeries, Bradenton, Florida's Retrobaked stands apart, lending glowing novelty to the most classic baked goods on any menu.

Owner Rachel Sokolewicz make treats the old-fashioned way: from scratch, by hand, and in small batches. Although other establishments might keep this philosophy in mind, Retrobaked's commitment to using local ingredients helps it distinguish itself from other bakeries.

"We believe that local tastes better, so we love using locally-made ingredients like spiced apple pie jam from Bradenton's Sunshine Canning, which you can find in our seasonal apple pie cupcake," Sokolewicz said. "Our lemon lavender cupcakes are made with fresh-squeezed lemon juice and French lavender, and we make our own graham crackers and "Oreos" before we crush them up for a recipe."

Using local ingredients helps Sokolewicz keep baking intriguing in Bradenton, but Retrobaked owes its achievement to boldly imaginative twists on classic baked goods. Re-imagining desserts from the past, from nostalgic childhood treats like oatmeal cream pies and creamy "Hostess" cupcakes to beautiful, vintage layer cakes transports foodies in Bradenton to a simpler, more peaceful environment. Retrobaked's charming shop is located in an authentic 1920s cottage and sells a variety of vintage aprons, cookbooks, and dishes.

"One of my personal favorites is our peanut butter fudge sammie: two soft-baked chocolate chip cookies filled with whipped peanut butter frosting, then half-dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled with crushed peanuts," Sokolewicz said. "It's a chocolate peanut butter lover's heaven! I'm also particularly smitten with our key lime pie cupcakes and Mexican hot chocolate fudge brownies."

In the very beginning, Sokolewicz started Retrobaked out of necessity after being diagnosed with several food allergies. Sokolewicz wasn't about to give up cake just because she could no longer have gluten, dairy, and eggs, so she created a bakery offering unique treats with fun, whimsical flavors that are just as delicious and indulgent as traditional baked goods. That way, no one in Bradenton ever has to go without dessert.

"We've been blown away by the support of our community, and we will be celebrating our 4th anniversary this October," Sokolewicz said. "We are a custom order bakery that only opens to the public during first Friday artwalks in the Village of the Arts and for special pop-up events."

The rest of the time, Retrobaked is open by appointment only for order pick-up, injecting fresh vigor into Florida's burgeoning bakery scene.
