Repairing a Passion for Band and Orchestra at Schmidt's Music

By Christian Burney

It's very clear what to expect when peering through the storefront of Schmidt's Music. Rows of shining brass instruments glint behind the front windows. Their woodwind brothers and string sisters wait within, resting comfortably on display. Trumpets and trombones, clarinets and even cellos line the old brick walls of the Pensacola repair shop. Dave Schmidt founded it in 1982 after graduating from Allied Musical Repair School in Elkhorn WI, and he still owns and manages the shop today.

You won't find any electric guitars or MIDI keyboards amongst the racks at Schmidt's Music. "We are a band and orchestra specialty store," says Owner David Schmidt. "Which means we primarily deal in brass, woodwind, and orchestral string instruments."

While Schmidt's Music originally opened as an instrument repair store, and remains one now, over the course of 30 years the shop has widened its focus. "We carry a full array of band and orchestral instruments, a wide range of accessories and the largest sheet music selection in the area."

Not surprisingly, Schmidt's Music's primary focus is on school music programs. Schmidt believes that public school music education enhances students' school experiences. The shop supports music in the schools and community through donations, sponsorship and volunteering. "

"Most people agree there is a strong correlation between the arts and overall quality of life," says Schmidt. "We fundamentally believe that participation in music enriches the lives of individuals, and in turn, the community as a whole."

Schmidt's Music is able to provide students with instruments through its Rent-to-Own program. Customers can choose an instrument and pay a monthly fee, which is put toward the purchase of the instrument. There are no interest rates, instrument exchanges can be made at any time and comprehensive maintenance or replacements come included at no additional cost.

Schmidt's shop has a repair staff of five technicians.
"Our five repair technicians are the best in the region, and draw from over 90 years of combined experience," Schmidt says. "They have the tools, parts and expertise to diagnose and repair any problem with your instrument."

Price estimates for repairs are always provided for free, as actual repair costs tend to vary depending on the level of repair necessary.

Schmidt delivers some advice for anyone considering a pursuit of music, suggesting it's always wise to have a teacher or professional be the first to introduce one to a new instrument. "Often, what a student has an interest in, based on what they have seen or heard, can be very different once they have the opportunity to hold and play the instruments."

Dave Schmidt developed Schmidt Music out of a love for music and community. Since the shop's founding, it's expanded to include a back parking lot and an additional building with a beautiful orchestra show room. Schmidt aims to ignite the passion for music in his community as it once did for him, and Schmidt's Music has granted him that ability.
