Miami Fitness Studio Introduces an AntiGravity® Exercise for Yoga Enthusiasts

By Kelly Church

For Miami, FL residents looking for a different type of workout, Stardust Fitness is the first in the area to utilize AntiGravity® Fitness, a system that uses some aerial yoga technique to improve a person's fitness. Owner Johanna Eckardt says she opened her business because she wanted people to believe in themselves again through fitness.

Classes at Stardust Fitness are catered to all levels of fitness. The FUNdamentals classes introduces students to the AntiGravity exercise methods, allowing them to get comfortable with the movement. It's open to all levels, but geared towards beginners.

The suspension fitness class encourages cardio and muscular strength with no impact exercises. It's designed for intermediate to advanced levels and requires that a student take a minimum of three FUNdamentals classes before attending. AIRbarrre® is another intermediate class that uses the AntiGravity® hammock featured in the other classes with ballet bar exercises.

A gentler class is the Radiant Flow for all levels that realigns the body and encourages flexibility. The Strength & Stretch I & II class also uses the AntiGravity hammock for deep stretching and is considered an intermediate class.

The AntiGravity hammock is designed to improve balance and core. Johanna says that strong balance begins with a strong core, which ultimately requires strong hips, ankles and glute muscles. She says balance is improved with one-legged poses, like Tree Pose where someone stands on one leg with the other foot brought in to the inside thigh. Holding each pose for 30 to 60 seconds each should greatly help balance, Johanna recommends. Poses like these use a lot of core strength.

"Core strength is not just the abdominals, but the entire connected torso in its three dimensional space and depth," Johanna says. "The core acts as a stabilizer for the body and controls the force we put out and is incorporated in our every movement."

No matter what type of exercise you do, Johanna says it's essential to maintain a healthy diet before and after your workout. Before your workout, reach for things that are burned quickly and provide the body with energy. She says good examples are dates, bananas, avocados and peanut butter. They're simple carbs that help the body reach peak performance.

To experience a Stardust Fitness class and get more advice from trainers like Johanna, the business offers individual class pricing and different levels of monthly pricing, depending on how many classes you want to go to per week. Classes are offered throughout the week at different times.
