Mermaid Swim School Is Passionately Teaching Children Safety in Water

By Elisha Neubauer

As a parent, your child's safety is your number one priority. It is important to take steps toward preventing injuries, especially when it is something that can be avoided, such as drowning. Statistics show that drowning is one of the leading causes of death for young children in the state of Florida. Between swimming pools, lakes, and beaches, children in the Sunshine State are constantly surrounded by water. Ensuring your child has exceptional swimming lessons is one way to avoid any unnecessary complications.

Charlotte Marin, Owner Mermaid Swim School in Sarasota, Florida, believes swim lessons are vital for children and their families.

"Here in the Tampa Bay area, we are surrounded by water so it's very important that students and families are educated and safe in and around the water," Marin said. "Swimming lessons can also be very fun, and great way to stay active and build confidence."

Marin was originally inspired to open Mermaid Swim School after realizing there was a need for a more flexible, personalized swim lesson experience in the Tampa Bay area.

"Prior to starting my own company, I worked for a similar type company in Los Angeles and I absolutely loved it," Marin said. "Being able to travel around the city, meeting all sorts of families on such a personal level, and working with children on a one on one basis in their home was very special."

When Marin returned to the Bay area, she just knew she had to open a similar program here. As not every child learns in the same manner, structured group settings do not allow every child to thrive. Individual lessons afford the instructor to make tailored alterations to the program to ensure success. In addition to differing learning behaviors, many modern families have a varied and busy schedule which can make attending set lesson times/dates difficult.

"We are able to create a flexible schedule that meets their needs, and we come to them," Marin said.

The Mermaid Swim School also offers a range of water-based programs for those in search of other activities. The most popular program offered is the small group Parent and Me class. This class involves small groups of 3-4 parents with their children. Each grouping is crafted from children that are the same ability in skill level. Students must be the age of three to participate.

"This is a super fun and economical way for parents to offer their babies their first experience in the water and bond at the same time," Marin said.

Other popular classes include Water Aerobics and courses taught in partnership with the Manasota BUDS (Bringing Up Down Syndrome) organization.
