Leave Your Special Event Photography to Jamie Lee Creativity

By Marina I. Jokic

Jamie Mathews, owner of Jamie Lee Creativity photography service, has been enthralled by capturing images since she received her first camera at the age of 12. Despite her childhood aspirations and interest in photography, her professional life took her down a different path. Mathews entered law enforcement and served as a 911 police dispatcher, albeit keeping her love of photography alive as a hobby. It wasn't until 2010 when a close friend of hers asked her to photograph a relative's wedding that revived Mathews' interest in photography once again.

"Over the next two years, I diligently worked to hone my style and build my portfolio," she said. "I wasn't ready to return to work and leave my newborn in childcare."

Her decision to leave her career as a dispatcher coincided with the birth of her son, and a desire to grow her own business.

To be exact, Mathews has been a photographer for over 20 years, but has been a paid professional photographer for the last six. She has enjoyed every minute of her relatively new career: the chance to meet so many new people, to foster a relationship with her clients, and most importantly, to have a positive impact on people's lives through her work.

In other words, Mathews knows that creating meaningful, expressive images of people is not just about snapping a few shots. She takes her time to learn the people in front of her camera, make them feel comfortable, and unafraid to show their temperaments and quirks.

"My sessions are unlike anything I've ever experience as a client, and my customers tend to tell me the same," she said. "I spend time getting to know my clients, learning about them, their children, and their lives. We laugh, and they open up in a way that allows me to capture their true personalities and relationships."

Jamie Lee Creativity travels all over central Florida, and Mathews also travels out-of-state to meet with clients and do different kind of shoots. She limits herself to a certain number of weddings per year, which allows her to devote her full attention and deliver better service to her clients. Apart from weddings, Mathews has done portraits, newborn photography, and destination shoots. Even though her portfolio is heavy on wedding photography, Mathews likes to keep her options open and experiment with others kinds of images as well.

"I am a hands-on photographer, I love establishing true relationships with my clients," she said.

Like any event, weddings have a unique character and require Mathews to be attuned to the changing emotions of her clients. Her favorite aspect of photographing newlyweds is capturing the heightened emotions of family and friends, and creating an everlasting testament to love.

"I am known to get goosebumps and tear up multiple times over the course of my couples' wedding days," she said. "Knowing that I am going to be able to capture all of these amazing moments, many they may have actually missed during the rush of the day, and give [them] back as a piece of art is what I love."
