Keeping Your Home Renovation on Track: An Interview with Amanda Walsh of Home Res-Q Inc.

By Amanda Walsh

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Home Res-Q. Inc. has been serving the Tampa Bay Area since 2004. We offer a wide scope of services: seamless gutters, soffit and fascia, siding, interior/exterior paint, drywall repair, popcorn ceiling removal, door/window replacement, kitchen/bathroom remodel, room additions and much more! We even offer design services with 3D capabilities. We have just under 20 employees and 10 trucks able to serve Hernando, Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. Our crew members are experienced, recommended and highly qualified to help with any improvement.

Can you briefly describe what a renovation is? Is it the same thing as a remodel?

That is a great question - most people use these terms universally too often. To renovate a property means to make it new again, as in updating cabinets, appliances, fixtures, etc. in your kitchen or bathroom. Remodel, however, means to make a change to your existing property, such as converting your garage to a bedroom or vice versa, to convert a bedroom into a family room. Then of course, restoring or restoration means to make a property the way it used to be, which is usually done with historic homes.

What are some of the most common renovation projects for houses in Florida?

No question it's kitchens and bathrooms. We get many calls for renovating these areas. Many would claim kitchens and bathrooms are most common because of the potential increased property value; however, we find that many of our clients are looking to update their space so they can use it efficiently and comfortably.

When a house needs a lot of improvements, how should homeowners decide what to do first?

Our main objective as a professional is to help assist and educate our homeowners. In many cases it is up to the homeowners to decide where they would like to begin. As a convenience to our clients, we do present our estimates on separate forms for each service area - this way they can manage their budget and decide what they would like to be taken care of first. However, when we run into situations where severe damage has occurred, naturally these areas would need to be taken care of first. We are flexible and do our best to work with our clients' needs.

What's the importance of choosing the right contractor, and do you have any tips for how to do that?

The most important factor when hiring a contractor is to make sure you are comfortable with the company and its representatives that will be completing the work. Never let the price take over your decision. Often the cheapest price is enticing, but you may feel more comfortable and respect the projected scope for work by another contractor with a higher price. Go with what feels right to you. Besides, you can always ask a contractor to match the price of another. In the worst case, they say no to price matching but you still know what you're looking at to make your final decision. Check the reviews on the company too.

What is one of the biggest challenges that homeowners run into during the renovation process? How can they successfully deal with that?

Homeowners seem to go through stages during the remodeling or renovation process. First, excitement while signing the contract and discussing the projected images of what your space will look like. Second, cautiousness as they attend your suppliers and choose the materials they prefer for their new space. Third, anxiety because the timeline is moving and the fear of not finishing on time takes over. This is usually when some unforeseen work needs to be addressed. Finally, relief when the project is completed and just in time (like your contractor promised). We understand the emotions that these tasks bring, so we always keep the avenues of communication open. \We have been known to speak with clients on weekends or even late evenings.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?
