It's All About the Little Things at Mama G's Coffee

By Jake Levin

Beate Goldstein decided it was time for a change after working in a bakery for just over a decade at Morton's Market, where she ran the front of the house.

With ample experience that goes beyond her time at Morton's, including back in her native Germany, Beate decided the time was right to begin her very own endeavor. On June 8, 2015, Beate opened up Mama G's Coffee, a dual bakery and coffeehouse in Sarasota, Fla.

"The location, financial support and everything else fell into place very quickly," Beate said of the process of opening the bakery, which she owns.

It's a family affair at Mama G's, as Beate has enlisted the help of her husband, Peter, her sons, Julian, Jonas and Jeremy and daughter, Joeline, calling them all a "vital part" of the operation. Along with support from the rest of her staff, Beate said that her family is blessed to provide a German bakery experience to "the best customers in the area."

The atmosphere is quite in Mama G's, with soft Christian music hear in the background. A never-ending aroma of pastries baked fresh each hour dominates the air, with the goal of keeping things simple for the clientele.

"We hope to slow down the daily routine of our patrons and hope they get to enjoy and see it's the 'little things' that make life worth living," Beate said.

Signature items at Mama G's include the oven fresh toaster strudels, enjoyable year round. Come Christmas time, Beate said she enjoys Lebkuchen, which is an old family recipe.

The bakery is heavily involved in philanthropic efforts in the area, which Beate believes is a no-brainer due to the blessings she receives from the community on a daily basis. Among the current efforts Mama G's partakes in are donating to KidsServe and Gritlock Ministry, which are both ministries that support orphans and fight against human trafficking.

Beate has also helped out a young girl named Lilli, who is battling leukemia, as well as a young, single mom in the area fighting breast cancer.

Mama G's Coffee is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located on 8431 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. To learn more about Mama G, her family and her bakery, visit the company's website, www.mamagscoffee.com.
