By Patricia Davis Brown

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

I am the owner of Patricia Davis Brown Designs, LLC. I am a licensed Interior designer and a certified kitchen and bath designer. In 2010 I decided to take my brand national by creating my interior design network of services. www.ProfessionalKitchenandBathPlans.com is a virtual design company through the use of Skype and a computer a client can walk me through their space and I can design any room in there home any where in the world they may live. www.PDBHomeStore.com is my online home furnishing store where anyone any where in the nation can shop for their home goods. www.DigthisDesign.net is my international design blog where I talk about ALL things design.

I love how technology has changed our industry and allows me to work without borders and expand into many areas of design.

Can you briefly talk about the importance of matching the way your home is decorated with your lifestyle and taste?

I am a firm believer in creating a home that feels good to you. Your home should be a space where you find peace, a feel good spot in this busy hectic world we live in. Your home should reflect your style, your feel and say YOU. It should overflow with what comforts you.

What's the first step you would take to create this type of space with interior design?

Interview the client on what they want out of their space. Design is personal to the individual and it is a collaboration between the designer and the client to create the space that is just right for the home owner.

What are the most important aspects of personal taste and lifestyle that should be factored into interior design?

The task being performed in any room is important to a designer in designing that space. You want the space to be functional along with beautiful.

Is there anything that people don't normally consider when it comes to redecorating their house that they should consider?

Fail to plan, plan to fail. Most people run out and hire a contractor before they have a plan and that is a mistake. I recommend working with a design professional and work out the plan to finalize all materials. Once you have a full set of plans then you are ready to speak to the contractors. By doing a plan and selecting all of your materials you can move forward in getting quality bids and comparing apples to apples. By not doing the planning first many people find themselves over budget and out of money before they finish their remodel. Having a plan eliminates costly change orders and puts the ball in the customers court.

What advice do you have for a household where the members have tastes and lifestyles that aren't necessarily the same?

You've heard of the man cave, right? Well everyone should have a spot that feels right to them and the common areas should mesh each others styles. Selecting wall colors that work for all is a good place to start. Furniture and accessories can become personal choices and a good designer can create an eclectic style that works well together.
