Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Smithco Services is an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration company founded in 1959. The current owner, Kevin Perron, who started as a Maintenance Technician in 1993, has worked his way to becoming the owner in 2004 and is very involved with the daily operations. Our staff is loaded with experience including former and current Instructors at Palm Beach State College. Having around 40 employees helps keep our company more like a warm family business instead of a cold corporation.

We are well known in the community and industry as being a great company to work for or to hire. Our services include all aspects of Residential and Commercial air conditioning from design and consultation of new installations to service and ongoing maintenance programs. What separates Smithco Services from most A/C companies is our versatility and expertise in Commercial Refrigeration and Ice Machines.

We design, install, service and maintain all types and sizes of freezers, chillers, coolers, and Ice machines from various businesses such as restaurants, food processing, agricultural, blood centers, medical buildings, or any general office. Another unique specialty of Smithco Services is the design and servicing of wine cellar rooms (mostly Residential) that need temperatures maintained to preserve the wine. We also install beer and soda system installations for the manufacturers in many restaurants throughout South Florida.

What are some potential home heating or cooling emergencies?

In South Florida, any type of equipment failure is a potential emergency. Clogged drains, electrical failure, refrigerant leaks can cause equipment to fail. Sometimes, not having the air conditioning is just not an option. Opening the windows just may not be enough when the temperatures outside rise. Our Commercial customers run the risk of loss of business, product or reputation if equipment such as storage coolers, freezers, exhaust vents in the kitchen, or even if the air conditioners fail. Imagine any Commercial business in the heat of summer with no air conditioning. It could get pretty uncomfortable. Would you go back?

What is the typical process to deal with these events?

Once we arrive, we feel it is critical to inspect the unit and perform diagnostic procedures and take readings to determine the cause for the equipment malfunction. After inspection, a quote for repair is provided and all our work is guaranteed.

What are a few ways a homeowner can help prevent these problems?

Be proactive in the caring of your HVAC system. An air conditioner needs preventative maintenance (just like your car) to make sure it is running efficiently and to prevent major damage. At the very least, changing your filters on a regular basis is required.

Why do think it is necessary to hire the help of professionals in terms of handling these emergencies?

Expertise. An HVAC technician not only has to be equipped to handle the functions of Air Conditioning, he also has to be an electrician, plumber, carpenter, mathematician, and mechanic. It's always best to hire a licensed and insured state certified company who should be qualified to diagnose a problem, apply a solution and restore your equipment to working condition.

What advice do you give your clients when it comes to maintaining their home heating and cooling systems?

A programmable thermostat can help manage your settings. Change your filters every 1-3 months depending on the filter type and environmental conditions. Have a Maintenance program with Smithco to verify maximum efficiency of the equipment by inspecting electrical wiring and connections, cleaning drain lines and pans, checking for proper refrigerant charges, blower belts, amps and voltage readings, cleaning coils, lubricating bearings and thermostat operation. We often can diagnose potentially costly problems with the equipment during our maintenance programs.
