Get Serious About Your Health at Pritikin Longevity Center + Spa

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

Called "the most effective diet, exercise and lifestyle-change program in the world" by London Business Times, Pritikin Longevity Center + Spa knows how to keep you healthy in body, mind and spirit. Located in Miami on 650 acres of lush tropical vegetation, this healthful paradise includes swimming pools, tennis courts and not one but five championship golf courses for exercise, while your mind gets rest and contemplation walking the many labyrinths.

The Pritikin Center is a one- or two-week program for those who take their healthy seriously. Starting Pritikin living at home means missing important lectures that are only presented at the Center. "We would highly recommend a stay as a jumping-off point for starting the program, Weinberg says. "You will have the support of our physicians, dietitians, exercise physiologists and more with a stay, whereas if you try to adopt living the Pritikin lifestyle on your own at home, that support system would be lacking.

Over forty years ago Nathan Pritikin "opened his home to a few friends who he would cook for and teach and it grew from there, as the program outgrew his house," describes Marketing Manager Jennifer Weinberg. According to Weinberg, Pritikin was once quoted as saying, "All I'm trying to do is wipe out heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity."

The Center is a much larger and more structured extension of Pritikin's home. Using their scientifically proven program for more healthful lifestyle changes, participants go to fitness classes, eat three healthfully prepared meals a day, have discussions with physicians, and attend lectures on everything from reading product labels to calorie density and preventing heart attacks.

They also learn to cook the Pritikin way with no added fat, salt or sugar and whole or minimally processed foods. A tricky task in a world filled with excesses and additives of all sorts. This is a diet where vegetables star, red meat is out and fruit may be your next desert. Today's coconut fad with its high saturated-fat content is to be avoided.

Believing fully that a healthy mind leads to a healthy body, the Center emphasizes the need for emotional wellness. Studies show that chronic stress causes overeating and is a major cause of disease. By adopting mind-body awareness, such as mood management and stress control, the Center shows participants how to fully take back their bodies. "The objective is to get our guests healthier while they're staying with us and to provide them with the skills to stay healthy once they return to the real world," explains Weinberg.
