Fitness Rocks! Is Keeping Exercise Fun

Delisa Layne, owner of Fitness Rocks! in Cocoa, Fla., hears people say they want to lose weight all the time. But she has a different way of interpreting things.

"Many people have the stated goal of losing weight," Layne said. "I like to rephrase that because I believe they really mean they want to lose fat."

Primarily a personal training studio, Layne operates Fitness Rocks! for people at all levels of experience, yet with the same goal in mind for all of her clients.

"The benefit of personal training is the customized fitness planning and teaching that meets each individual exactly where they are in life," she said. "Some people have worked out all of their lives and want some variety. Some people haven't worked out since high school."

Whether a person is looking for improved technique in their strength training, or perhaps cross training for a specific sport, Layne said that there are so many ways she enjoys helping people reach their goals.

Layne said that personal training sessions start with an evaluation to determine a baseline of fitness and various body measurements if the client's goals include body composition. Each session includes exercise's that support a client's goals, as well as modifications to either decrease or increase the level of burden for a given client.

In addition to strength training, Layne emphasized that a big part of fitness is dietary. This is where losing fat rather than weight comes in.

"You can change the shape of your body by losing fat and gaining muscle and still weigh about the same as before," she said. "Who cares if you weigh the same, but you drop a clothing size or two because you're a bit leaner and more fit?"

Since so much of Fitness Rocks! is about working out on a personal level, there's only one group class offered: boot camp. But like so many other aspects of the business, Layne is able to tailor it to an individual's needs.

"It is a class during which each participant can increase or decrease the challenge as needed," she said of 'boot camp.' "This keeps the class suitable for all fitness levels."
