Explore South Florida's Natural Beauty- By Stand-Up Paddleboard

By Elisha Neubauer

For those who live in Florida full-time, the tourism centers- filled with theme parks, luxury hotels, and themed restaurants- can be a bit tiresome. But there is more to Florida than meets the eye. The Sunshine State possesses a spectacular eco-system, with stunning waterways, natural habitats, and beautiful scenery.

Jupiter, located in South Florida, is a popular hub for eco-tourism because it provides unspoiled natural waterways and abundant sea life- and is home to the wild and scenic Loxahatchee River. Since 1997, Jupiter Outdoor Center has prided itself on being one of Florida's top picks for providing outdoor eco-adventures to nature lovers across the state.

At Jupiter Outdoor Center, you can rent a kayak, learn to stand-up paddleboard, snorkel, kayak fish, or participate in classes or guided tours. "Exploring the Jupiter waterways on a kayak or paddleboard is the ideal way to soak in the sights and coastal culture that abounds here," says Ryan Sullivan, Director of Operations for Jupiter Outdoor Center. Sullivan says that their clients often get a chance to see manatees, sea turtles, and even dolphins! You can either head out on your own, hire a personal guide, or join one of the Center's daily Mangrove and Manatee Tours for 90 minute group tour.

Curious about kayak fishing? "Kayak fishing is something new that we offer based on it being one of the fastest growing activities in the kayak industry," Sullivan explains. "It is usually small charter groups of 3 - 4 anglers spending several hours either inshore or offshore depending on the gamefish you are targeting, depending on what's in season. It is popular, but the most popular activity is surely stand-up paddleboarding as it comprises about 70% of our business."

If you've never tried paddleboarding, JOC offers several classes and group lessons for those who are interested in learning the sport. "The average person can learn to paddleboard within 10-15 minutes," says Sullivan. For a more personal approach and extra attention to technique, you can even take an hour-long private lesson with an instructor. Customize your lessons with a variety of options, including teaching-centered tours of the Jupiter Inlet Aquatic Preserve and discounts for group lessons. JOC also hosts summer camps and youth programs to help instill a love of the outdoors in your young children and adventurous teens.

While Florida provides many options for its resident families, taking some time out to explore the natural waterways and coastal cultures of the peninsula state is a must-add to your weekend to-do list. Scheduling tours, classes, or private rentals with Jupiter Outdoor Center will allow you and your family to experience outdoor exploration, fishing, snorkeling and a multitude of other outdoor experiences all in one convenient location.

Take a break from the busy theme parks, arcades, and shopping malls to encounter the natural side of Florida with your friends and family.
