Experiencing Contemporary Art in the NOW

By Kelly Church

Inspired by the idea of living in the now, NOW Contemporary Art in Miami, FL creates a relationship between today's artist and viewer, displaying work from influential and contemporary artists. According to gallery director Pablo Dona, the gallery focuses on working with non-conventional art, encouraging today's innovative artists to continue to think outside the box.

"I believe that art is a reflection of society, a tool to understand it and document it," Dona says. "Life to me happens only in the present instant (now), this (now) is all we have and we always will. I can only speak of that now that I am part of it and I am living every day."

Artists featured at NOW Contemporary Art are found by Dona through research and visiting studios. Dona hits the pavement in Miami and seeks out artists that the gallery views as an influential, contemporary artist. Often, local artists are featured as a result of this search.

"The process of choosing the artist is purely personal, once you have a project where mind, heart and action is one harmonious thing working together, the selection is natural," Dona says. "You just know which artist belongs to the project and which one doesn't."

Exhibitions at NOW Contemporary Art change throughout the year, featuring different artists each time. With 31 artists at the gallery, there's plenty of contemporary art to see, much of it including three-dimensional pieces.

"The gallery is a space where everything could be possible, even if it only happens in the artwork," Dona says. "To me the gallery is not a gallery, neither [is] the artist. It's all one thing and above all the whole project is about people who have a passion for what they do and they want to share their dream with the world. It's about personal and unique contributions to life."

For those intimidated by contemporary art, Dona encourages them to lose their fear and walk into a gallery to explore. Everyone is welcome at NOW Contemporary Art, even those who have never been exposed to that form of creativity before. Dona urges everyone to explore their own creativity, whether that be drawing, painting or developing their own three-dimensional pieces.
