Creative Minds Come Together at Whim So Doodle

By Pamela Sosnowski

What started as a scrapbooking supplies shop in the '90s has become a crafter's paradise. Whim So Doodle in St. Petersburg carries materials for just about every craft while its classes bring customers together to learn new techniques and have fun.

At Whim So Doodle in St. Petersburg, crafting enthusiasts of all abilities will find what they need to start or complete a creative project. What began as a downtown source for scrapbooking, rubber stamps, and paper crafts in the '90s has expanded into a full-fledged crafter's paradise that now includes artist supplies, fabric, die cutting machines, and more.

Although "the Doodle", as the store is affectionately referred to by its customer base, carries a wide variety of crafting supplies, scrapbooking tools remain the heart of the store's inventory. "Whim So Doodle was founded on the premise of documenting life's special events. We have always believed that documenting, journaling and preserving memories can be a wonderful gift," says Jill Orobello, the store's owner. "Scrapbooking is an art that has been around forever, saving photos and memorabilia in bound books for future generations to enjoy. Scrapbooking can be as simple as gluing photos to a page with simple cardstock paper backgrounds to a multidimensional work of art combining photos, ephemera, die cuts, alphabet stickers, embellishments, stamping, ribbon and more."

The store's staff members are all crafting experts who enjoy sharing their techniques and love for their hobbies with others. Says Orobello, "We host monthly classes that provide an incredible array of opportunities to learn scrapbooking, card making, mixed media art, coloring, creating gift tags, Bible journaling, crafting, and sewing. We also host monthly "crops" for our customers to utilize our classroom space enabling them to spread out and work on projects while learning, inspiring, creating, laughing and sharing with each other." The store also regularly invites nationally recognized instructors to give their customers the chance to learn from industry pros.

And if an item cannot be purchased in person at the store, Whim So Doodle will gladly ship it. Any item that the store posts to its social media channels can usually be shipped directly to a customer.

Whim So Doodle enjoys a close relationship with its customers, particularly on social media, and is prepared to meet their needs as crafting evolves. "Watching industry trends and providing our customers with the latest and greatest products/techniques/classes and services available is our goal," says Orobello. "We listen to what are customers are looking for and what they are interested in and do our best to provide them with the tools that they need. Since we opened our first space, we have encouraged and helped all of our customers preserve those events that make life so special."
