What is the importance of including an irrigation system in my landscape?

Unless the landscaping is strictly native plantings, an irrigation system is a very important and necessary part of maintaining a landscape. A properly installed and maintained irrigation system provides the right amount of water, for the right length of time, at the right time of day - preserving both your landscape investment and your water. Using only licensed irrigation contractors to install and maintain your irrigation system ensures your landscape, water, and wallet are protected. Tip: Fertilization is also very important in maintaining a flourishing landscape.

What are the benefits associated with using seasonal, local plants in my garden bed?

Seasonal plants are plants that have adapted to the different seasons, doing well in times of excessive rain, heat and cold. Using local plants gives you success with material adapted to your area.

How do I successfully integrate hardscaping with the surrounding plants?

It's best to choose a hardscaping element that complements your existing plant material and doesn't interfere with the surrounding plants' growth. Knowing the mature size of the surrounding plants is key.

What are some of the most common hardscapes included in landscaping and what benefits do they provide?

The most common hardscape elements include rocks, decks, patios, gazebos, pergolas, lighting, retaining walls, fountains, fireplaces, swings, benches, etc. Hardscaping is a great element that can add to the functionality of your outdoor living space i.e. to relax and/or entertain while also pleasing the eye.

What does a good landscape design do for the tenants of the home?

The outside of your home is the first thing people notice, so it is important to make it look nice. Hiring a professional landscaper to create and maintain your outdoor living area can do a lot of good. Here are some of the benefits of landscaping:

a) It Improves Your Curb Appeal- One of the main benefits of landscaping is that it improves your curb appeal. If you have a pretty pond in your backyard and lovely trees surrounding your house, people are more likely to take a second look.

b) It Can Reduce Your Energy Costs- Everyone loves saving money on energy costs, right? Well, if you get the right landscaping design, you can save on energy costs. For example, if you plant a lot of trees around your home, less sunlight will be able to get in your home, so your air conditioner will not have to work as hard.

c) It Can Increase Your Property Value- If you are looking to increase your property value, landscaping your outdoor living area is definitely a good idea. If prospective buyers drive by your home and see beautiful trees and flowers, they will be much more intrigued.

What landscape elements can help my lawn function as an "outdoor living space"?

A great way to add to the enjoyment of any "outdoor living space" is to add shade, especially in the Florida heat. Shade can be offered by trees or by hardscaping such as a gazebo or pergola. If you like to entertain, consider a deck or patio that provides plenty of entertaining space for family and friends to gather. For those who are looking more for their own private oasis or a quiet place to enjoy nature; implementing strategic plantings for privacy or to attract birds and butterflies while incorporating seating and/or a water feature also works well to creating an outdoor living space.

Should the amount of sunlight affect the kinds of plant I can use?

Yes, certain plant material thrives in the sun such as flowering plants. Other plant material tend to do better adapted to less sunlight (part sun or shade). Be sure to research and choose the right plant for the right area to ensure a successful yard.
