Create Your Own Personal Haven From Frame to Floor with Coconut Grove Gallery & Interiors

By Elisha Neubauer

What once started as a small frame shop has blossomed and bloomed into a full scale gallery- encompassing everything from home furnishings, art, and décor. The Coconut Grove Gallery in Miami, Florida, has come a long way since it first opened its doors in 1986, and they have no plans to stop any time soon. Family owned and operated, Coconut Grove continues to spread their passion for design across the tropical end of the Sunshine State.

Frank and Shelia Kuhl began their excursion into design by opening a small frame shop, aimed at providing the perfect frames for the perfect artwork. The frame shop became a gateway for the Kuhls, and in no time, they found themselves venturing further into the world of design. "We quickly expanded to house a small art gallery and then increased our offerings to include home furnishings," Janel Kuhl, Managing Designer, explained. "From there we naturally grew into expanded design services including home move-ins and furniture placement."

Kuhl, daughter to Frank and Shelia, became part of the Coconut Grove experience in 2008. With her degree in Interior Design and Marketing from University of Florida and seven years of experience in commercial design, Kuhl seemed destined to join the family business. When asked about her role in the business, Kuhl explained to us that she now manages the many construction and home renovation projects that the gallery adds to their portfolio every year.

Janel Kuhl obviously followed in her parent's footsteps when it came to jumping head first into the design industry, but what exactly drove her parents, Frank and Shelia Kuhl, to wade in the waters of the interior design business?

"The company was started with a passion for unique and beautiful objects," Kuhl told us. "They had the simple vision of creating the type of store that they would enjoy shopping in, one with surprising treasures around every corner."

Clearly, the Kuhls had the right concept in mind when they opened Coconut Grove Gallery, and as they near their thirty year anniversary, they're more popular than ever. We asked Kuhl what she felt set the company apart from other design shops and were surprised at her response. "We love to work with projects of any scale and budget," she detailed. "Many other design firms are only able to take on major projects. We understand that every client is a long standing relationship and even minor renovations can lead to major future projects."

She continued, explaining that many Coconut Grove clients have been with them for many years, spanning over the course of many homes. "They know we are the place to get excellent service and great design," she states.

Coconut Grove makes sure to offer their clients variety in their design options. They have eight on-staff designers and consult with twice as many on a project by project basis. In the gallery itself, they feature over seventy-five artists that cover everything from realistic to abstract works. "Some of our favorites are Jack Amoroso, Jane Bazinet, Deborah Rubin, Richard Tiberius and Paulina Troncoso," says Kuhl. "We endeavor to be able to meet any client's style needs. With over 100 lines of furniture represented we are able to design spaces from traditional to contemporary and everything in between!"
