BHF Supports Broward Health System's Mission Through Fundraising and Philanthropy

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

Wealth nor status does not matter to Broward Health- one of the 10 largest healthcare systems in the United States. Represented since 1999 by the nonprofit Broward Health Foundation in Ft. Lauderdale, who works to further quality healthcare for the diverse population of Broward County, Broward Health's mission remains unchanged. As President and CEO of Broward Health Foundation, Dennis Stefanacci tells us, "Although healthcare has changed dramatically in the last century; the values, mission and purpose of Broward Health has not. Its mission today is the same as it was almost 80 years ago- to care for the people of Broward County regardless of income, status or circumstance."

The Foundation raises funds to support the entire Broward Health Hospital in South Florida. Its four hospitals, a children's hospital, and various satellite centers, such as the Lillian S. Wells Women's Health Center or the Broward Health Pediatric Hematology and Outpatient Oncology Center, had construction funded by contributions or philanthropic alliances brought in by the Foundation.

Funds are now being raised to build on to and renovate its Children's Hospital, expand pediatric services at the Coral Springs facility, create a Neurological Institute at North and aid the men's health initiative expansion at Imperial Point.

The Foundation's 'KIDS Campaign' is in the latter stages of raising funds to improve the facilities at the children's hospital. Stefanacci tells us, "For far too long, we've been providing the best surgical and recovery care in an environment that doesn't completely meet the needs of our patients' families." This capital campaign was started to raise in excessive of $20 million of the needed $52 million for the project. In 2014, the Salah Foundation pledged $10 million in a dollar-for-dollar, all-or-nothing grant that must be matched by other Foundation-raised project funds by the end June.

These are extensive projects that need big funding. "To successfully meet this and other fundraising goals, the Foundation is raising funds through individual and corporate gifts, annual fund campaigns (including an employee giving program and a physician giving program), nongovernmental grants, planned gifts and special events like its System-wide Black Tie Ball, Barefoot on the Beach, and its golf tournament," says Stefanacci.

Aside from Broward Health's medical centers and children's hospital, Stefanacci lists of other facilities or services offered, "There is an outpatient surgical center, primary care centers, school-based clinics, specialty care programs, home-health and hospice services, health education programs, free and low-cost screenings, and business partnerships." Billed as a healthcare system that does "whatever it takes," the Foundation helps Broward Health continually grow and fulfill their mission with needed funds and support so it can provide high-quality care to the entire Broward County community.
